Baby Betting Pool Ideas: 15 Fun Bets Beyond the Due Date

Every baby betting pool starts with the same bet: which day will the baby arrive? It's a great bet. It's also the one everybody clusters around, because the due date tells half the room exactly where to aim. The pools people still talk about years later mix it up: a bet for the number lovers, a bet for the guests who know nothing, a bet that's really about the parents.

Below are 15 baby betting pool ideas, each with the format that makes it work and how to settle it once the baby is here. Pick four or five, or build a whole evening around them.

Bets for the number lovers

These are the bets with a measurable answer. They reward the people who study ultrasound photos and family birth weights like a racing form.

1. Closest without going over. The game show classic. Everyone guesses the birth weight, and the winner is the closest guess that isn't heavier than the real thing. Overshoot by an ounce and you're out. It turns a plain number into a tactical bet, and someone will always guess suspiciously low.

2. Over/under on the weight. Set one line, say 7 lb 8 oz (3.4 kg), and every guest picks a side. Perfect for a quick bet at the shower itself: two piles of names, done in a minute. Half the room wins, which makes for a loud announcement.

3. The birth-time clock. Draw a big clock face and let guests write their name on a minute. Closest minute to the actual birth time wins. Morning or evening is part of the bet, so somebody who picks 3:15 has to decide whether that's a night owl or an afternoon arrival.

4. Date buckets. Instead of one exact day, split the calendar into buckets: "more than a week early", "a few days early", "on the due date", "a few days late", "more than a week late". Ideal for big groups where a single-day bet would leave most guests empty-handed.

5. Length in inches (or centimeters). Nobody ever knows what a normal birth length is, which is exactly why it's fun. Closest guess wins, ties go to the earlier entry.

Bets for the guests who say "I have no idea"

Not everyone wants to study. These bets level the field, so grandpa has the same shot as your cousin the midwife.

6. The baby lottery. Write every possible birth hour, 00:00 to 23:00, on a slip of paper and let guests draw one blind. Whoever holds the hour of birth wins. Pure luck, zero pressure.

7. Baby squares. The Super Bowl squares format, baby edition: a 10x10 grid where the last digit of the weight and the last digit of the birth minute decide the winning square. We wrote a full guide to the baby squares pool with a grid you can copy.

8. Team boy or team girl. If the sex is still a surprise, split the shower into two teams. Everyone on the winning team gets bragging rights, and the losing team brings dessert to the first visit.

9. Hair or no hair. A simple yes/no bet with a surprisingly emotional answer. Add a bonus round for hair color if your family has strong opinions about whose genes will win.

Side bets on the parents

The baby isn't the only one with something to prove. These bets are where the stories come from.

10. Who cries first? Mom, dad, or the baby. Settled by the parents' honest testimony, which is half the fun.

11. First name out of the bag. If the name is a secret, let guests bet on the first letter. Bolder guests can bet on the full name. The real name reveal becomes a payout moment.

12. The hospital bag bet. Will the bag be packed on time, or will something important be left at home? Pick the item you think gets forgotten. The phone charger is the favorite, the shoes are the dark horse.

13. First visitor. Which grandparent, aunt or best friend makes it to the baby first? Expect fierce lobbying.

Bets for the long game

These pay out months later, which keeps the group chat alive long after the shower.

14. First word. "Mama", "dada", or the name of the family dog. Write the bets down and seal them in an envelope to open on the first birthday.

15. First steps. Bet on the month. Closest month wins, and the winner gets to say "I told you so" at the first birthday party.

How to settle every bet fairly

A betting pool lives or dies on whether people trust the result. Three habits keep it friendly:

  • Write down the format before anyone guesses. "Closest wins" and "closest without going over" give different winners. Decide which one you're playing.
  • Close the bets before the baby can arrive. Around 36 weeks is a good cutoff. A bet placed from the delivery room is not a bet.
  • Decide the tiebreaker up front. Birth time is the best tiebreaker because it's precise to the minute. Our baby pool rules cover tiebreakers, prizes and the money question in detail.

What's at stake?

You don't need cash to make a bet feel real. Some of the best prizes cost nothing: first turn holding the baby, a homemade "I called it" trophy, or a voucher for one free night of babysitting (redeemed by the parents, with gratitude). If your group does want an entry fee, a popular option is to put the pot toward a gift for the parents, so the winner gets the glory and the baby gets a stroller. Whatever you choose, say it before the first bet goes in.

Let the pool keep score

Running five bets on paper means five lists to chase and five calculations once the baby arrives, usually while everyone is refreshing the group chat for news. An online baby betting pool takes the classic bets (date, time, weight, length, sex, hair and eye color, name) and scores them automatically on a sliding scale, so being close still earns points. You decide how many points each question is worth, so if weight is your family's big rivalry, make it count. The side bets about the parents work best on a piece of paper on the fridge, right where everyone can see them.

Whichever bets you choose, the real prize is the list itself. A year from now, reading back who guessed what is one of the sweetest parts of the whole story.
