Guess the Baby Name Game: 7 Ways to Play at a Baby Shower (Without Spoiling the Secret)
How to play the guess the baby name game at a baby shower: 7 name games with rules, a copyable score card, a celebrity quiz with answers and fair scoring.
Free, and your guests don't need an account.
"So, have you picked a name yet?" Every parent-to-be hears it, and the ones keeping the name a secret know what comes next: teasing, guessing, people fishing for hints. Why not turn it into a game? Guessing the baby's name is one of the best-loved baby shower games for a reason. Everyone has an opinion, nobody knows for sure, and the big reveal only happens when the baby arrives.
Below are seven baby name games, from a ten-minute icebreaker to a guessing game that lasts the whole pregnancy, plus the house rules that stop anyone from spilling the secret by accident.
First: who already knows the name?
Settle this before the party, or the game falls apart on the day.
- Anyone who knows the name doesn't play. Grandparents in on it? Make them judges or the official reader. They'll love saying "no idea" with a perfectly straight face.
- The parents never answer direct questions. "Does it start with an L?" gets a smile, every time. No nods, no raised eyebrows.
- Decide what counts as "right" in advance. Is Zoe the same as Zoey? Only the first name, or the middle name too? Write it down, and there's nothing to argue about after the birth.
Already announced the name? Games 5, 6 and 7 still work perfectly, and you can play game 1 with the middle name.
1. The sealed envelope
The classic guess the baby name game. Each guest writes one name on a card, seals it in an envelope and writes their own name on the outside. The parents keep the pile unopened until after the birth.
Why it works: it costs nothing and the reveal is gold. Once the baby is here, the parents open the envelopes together and post a photo of the winner in the family group chat. Even the joke guesses ("Bartholomew, after Grandpa, I'm sure of it") become part of the story.
2. Hot or cold
Guests take turns calling out a name, and the mom-to-be only answers "warm", "cold" or "ice cold". After ten minutes the room has a theory, and the theory is usually wrong. That's the fun of it.
One rule: "warm" means something like the same style or the same length, never the same first letter. Otherwise the secret is gone in three rounds.
3. Name clue card
For groups who'd rather not bet everything on one guess. Instead of the name, guests predict its features, so almost everyone scores something even if nobody nails it. Copy this card:
| Question | Your guess | Points |
|---|---|---|
| What letter does the name start with? | 3 | |
| How many letters in the first name? | 2 | |
| How many syllables? | 1 | |
| Does it end in a vowel? | yes / no | 1 |
| Named after a family member? | yes / no | 2 |
| More than one middle name? | yes / no | 1 |
| The name itself (bonus) | 10 |
Mark the cards after the birth. Highest total wins.
4. The letter draw
The alphabet version of a baby squares pool. Put 26 letter cards or wooden letter blocks in a bag and have each guest draw one blind. Whoever draws the first letter of the baby's name wins.
Drawing beats choosing here, because not every letter has the same odds: far more names start with an A, J or M than with a Q or an X. With fewer than 26 guests, the leftover letters go to the parents, who "win" if nobody else does. With a bigger crowd, put two sets of letters in the bag.
5. Baby name A to Z
A speed game that works whether the name is a secret or not. Everyone gets a sheet with the letters A to Z and three minutes to write a baby name next to each one. Most letters filled wins.
A sweet bonus for parents still on the fence: read through the lists afterwards. There might be a name in there you'd never have thought of.
6. The name mash-up
Give each guest a card with both parents' first names. The task: come up with a baby name using only letters from those two names. James and Emily, for example, give you Mia, Jamie or Miles. After five minutes everyone reads theirs out and the parents-to-be pick a favorite.
It always produces a few surprisingly lovely names and at least one impossible one. Both are great for the room.
7. Celebrity baby name quiz
A quiz with answers you can check. Read out the baby's name and have guests guess which famous parents chose it.

Play it in table teams. The debate over number 8 is half the fun.
Guessing the name with the whole family, near and far
A baby shower lasts an afternoon, but guessing the name can go on for months, and not everyone can make it on the day. That's what an online baby pool is for: switch on the "What will be the name?" question, share the link in the family chat, and everyone adds their guess along with the birth date, the weight and boy or girl.
Every guess is locked in before the birth, so no "that's what I would have said" afterwards. Once the baby arrives, you fill in the real name and the leaderboard works itself out. The full name, exactly right, is worth 20 points, the most of any question, and getting just the first name right still earns 10. Capital letters don't matter, spelling does. The rest of the scoring is explained in our baby pool rules.
Need more to fill the afternoon? Our baby shower games everyone will actually love pair nicely with any of the name games above.
Tips for a perfect reveal
- Keep every guess. The envelopes, the clue cards, the mash-up lists. Ten years from now it's a wonderful page in the baby book.
- Don't post the winner before the name. Share the real name first, give everyone a moment to wonder who got it, then crown the winner. Suspense is free.
- Pick a small prize with meaning. The winner gets the first cuddle after the parents, or a card with the baby's name and birth date on it.
The best thing about the guess the baby name game: when the baby arrives, everyone says the name out loud for the first time. And someone always shouts, "I knew it!"
